ART AUCTION
This beautiful painting is going up for auction on SAT 4/3 9pm EST! Blue on Blue, 2014 Oil on Linen, Framed By: Robert Grady ARTIST STATEMENT As in all of RJ Grady‘s still life paintings, the artist explorers narratives between the still life object and the background. In this case the lyrical fruit motif on the Italian water pitcher contrasts with the more prosaic blueberry pattern, at times dissolving the boundary between the two. https://rjgrady.com |

Donating them is a lovely way to give some of your former prized possessions a new home (e.g., gently worn clothes, bags, tango shoes, kitchen tools and accessories, furniture, tickets, a weekend at your second home, anything you think others might enjoy!).
Going once, going twice...

ARTIST BIO
Painter RJ Grady was born in Hartford, CT. After a three year professional program of studio art courses at the School of the Worcester Art Museum, he earned his B.A. from Clark University in 1975. In 1975, Grady was invited by renowned still life painter Robert Douglas Hunter to study under him at the historic Fenway Studios building in Boston. During his two year mentorship with Hunter, Grady met Gyorgy Kepes, the esteemed Bauhaus-affiliated artist and founder of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Grady served for several years as Kepes’ studio assistant, working closely with him on monumental stained glass projects commissioned for the Harvard Square subway station in Cambridge, MA, and Christ the King Catholic Church in Milwaukie, OR. From 1975 to 1980, Grady taught painting at the Worcester Art Museum, and was a visiting lecturer in drawing and painting at Holy Cross College. A founding member of Fenway Studios Incorporated artist cooperative, Grady was instrumental in Fenway Studios’ achievement of National Historic Landmark status in 1989. He is also a founding member of Friends of Fenway Studios, a non-profit corporation dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Fenway Studios, for which he served as secretary for many years. His work has been featured in many galleries, most notably a two-person show at Vose Galleries in Boston, several group exhibitions at venues including the Fitchburg Art Museum in Fitchburg, MA, as well numerous juried exhibitions nationwide. In October of 2021 his work will be featured in a three person exhibition at the Center for Crafts at Worcester State University. |
ARTIST INTENT
My focus is to expand on the historical tradition of still life painting. Using the tools of my academic background in still life, perspective and worn out narratives are challenged, pushing the edges of perception to create an unexpected dialogue between object and ground. Where the still life typically strives to construct spatial order among multiple objects, I investigate the relationship of a single object or limited objects to the background. At first glance, the work appears to be painted in the manner of realism, but breaking the rules of perspective and creating spatial impossibilities helps invoke a sense of mystery. Often the object and ground are inexplicably intertwined. Employing an aerial point of view bestows a sense of privacy on the viewer, often produced in large-scale, renders delicate, intimate objects as monumental. Subjects are chosen carefully for their cultural significance, exploring the juxtaposition and conflation of divergent historical eras, cultures, and values. - Robert Grady |
